When my 5-year-old taught me about professional courage

The other week, I watched my daughter tour her future kindergarten.

That night, as I tucked her into bed, she looked up at me with those big eyes: “Mommy, who will my teachers be? What will my schedule look like? Will I know what to do?”

My heart squeezed because I heard in her voice something I hear so often in my coaching calls - that mixture of excitement and uncertainty that comes with any big change.

It reminded me of a recent client who was launching their own business. Like my daughter, they had all these questions swirling: “Will I know what to do? What if I do it wrong? Do I have to become someone different to succeed?”

Here’s the thing that struck me - whether you’re 5 or 45, those butterflies in your stomach feel exactly the same.

But just like I could reassure my daughter that her natural curiosity and kindness were exactly what she needed for kindergarten, I watched my client light up when they realized they didn’t have to become a different person to succeed in business.

The moment they understood they could sell authentically as themselves? The energy shift was immediate. Suddenly, they were bubbling with ideas about who they could reach out to and how they could connect - all while being completely, authentically themselves.

Because here’s what I know to be true: The best transitions don’t require you to become someone else. They invite you to be more fully yourself.

I’d love to hear from you - what’s your “kindergarten moment” right now? What transition has you feeling both excited and uncertain? Reply to this email and let me know - I read and respond to every message personally.

Jenny
