what I do when my brain starts building the case for no

2 min

My brain almost made a big decision for me last week.

Before I even had a chance to think.

I came across an opportunity. The moment I heard it out loud, I felt it. Resistance. Immediate and loud. And within seconds, my brain was already building the case for no.

I’ve learned to recognize this pattern. Resistance shows up fast. And if I let it, it makes the decision before I’ve had a real chance to sit with something.

So instead of letting it run the show, I brought it to my coaching cohort.

And I was coached through something that felt almost too simple: just sit with it.

No problem-solving. No rethinking. No escaping. Just breathing through the tightness in my chest and letting the feeling be there.

What I noticed surprised me.

When I stopped trying to think my way out of the resistance, a question came through:

What would it look like if I approached this as a leader instead of someone just trying to get out of something uncomfortable?

That question shifted something.

Then it happened again. A second opportunity. Same pattern. Same loud resistance. This time, I caught it faster.

Two opportunities. Two calls set up for this week to learn more, get creative, and see what’s actually possible.

I’m not saying yes to either of them yet. But I’m staying in the conversation long enough to find out.

That feels like the right kind of leadership right now.

Here’s what I know about resistance: it’s not always a signal to stop. Sometimes it’s just discomfort asking to be heard.

The inner work isn’t separate from your professional life. It shows up in every decision, every conversation, every moment you’re tempted to let your brain make the call before you’ve had a real chance to think.

This is exactly the kind of thing I work through with my 1:1 coaching clients. Not just the strategy, but the patterns underneath it. The ones that make decisions for us before we even realize it.

If this resonates with you and you’re curious about what it might look like to explore that kind of work together, I’d love to have a conversation. Just a real one, to see if it’s a fit.
