I wish I had started this sooner… (A founder’s biggest regret)

Have you ever had one of those conversations that just sticks with you?

This week, I had exactly that kind of moment with a founder. We were discussing relationship building, and his words - “I wish I had started this sooner” - haven’t left my mind since.

What struck me most wasn’t just what he said, but how deeply it resonated with what I’ve seen across my 20+ years in sales and coaching. Here’s why this matters for you…

The Reality Check
This founder, like many of us, fell into a common trap in his early days:
• Staying heads down, laser-focused on tasks
• Treating every interaction as a potential transaction
• Missing countless opportunities for meaningful connections
• Forgetting that business, at its core, is human-to-human

The Better Way Forward
What he learned (and what I’ve seen work consistently) is this approach:

  1. Get Curious About Everyone
Not just potential clients or “important” people. Every person has a unique perspective to offer.
  2. Connect Authentically
    • Reach out to industry veterans AND newcomers
    • Be genuine in your interactions
    • Admit when you don’t have all the answers
    • Ask for help (people genuinely love to share their expertise)
  3. Close the Loop
One game-changing habit: Follow up to share how someone’s help impacted you. This simple act transforms one-time interactions into lasting relationships.
